Why Organic Cotton?
conventional cotton is the world's dirtiest crop. a quarter of the world’s pesticides are used to grow cotton and the way cotton is currently grown and harvested endangers lives. Workers are exposed to pesticides on a regular basis, as well as people living in close proximity to the cotton fields. the main pest that affects cotton is the boll weevil. tons of pesticides are sprayed on cotton fields every year to eradicate this bug, but the problem with using poison to kill one bug is that it kills all the other beneficial insects that keep nature in check. every year new chemicals and pesticides are developed and brought to market. the epa approves the products before they are tested for safety on humans so pesticides reach the public while studies are still being done on the product. to make a cotton product, over 8,000 chemicals are involved. In fact, most of the pesticides used on regular cotton have been labeled as human carcinogens. conventional cotton uses 25% of the world’s insecticides, 10% of the world’s pesticides and unfortunately, cotton fulfills half the world’s needs for fiber. that’s a lot of cotton and a lot of pesticides and a lot of people.
Organic cotton is generally rain-fed, using less water than regular cotton and no pesticides. the result is that what lies next to your skin is as pure and soft as an angel’s wings. there are almost no chemicals involved in the growing of or production of organic cotton t-shirts. Organic cotton not only doesn’t use pesticides, but it uses a lot less water. how? Because organic cotton is a rotation crop, when crops are rotated the soil maintains its nutrients and is better able to hold water in. Regular cotton is usually the sole crop planted. cotton depletes the soil, and leaves it incapable of holding water. Mass irrigation happens on regular cotton and uses 3,000 cubic meters more of water per acre to grow than organic cotton. Most organic cotton is rain-fed and not irrigated, so helps to save water. Organic cotton is not only better for the environment, it is better for you.
